Our digital counter for the Grundig TS1000 was developed to replace the mechanical counter in the Grundig TS1000 tape machine.

The plastic of the mechanical counters of the TS1000 is not necessarily suitable for a service life of many decades. As a result, many of these counters no longer work, which is of course a great pity for the owners of these magnificent machines. There are electronic replacement counters for other tape recorders, but not for the TS1000 until now, because:

It was extremely challenging to implement not just a simple counter, but such a complex system as the TS1000 counter with its autostop preselection, in a way that both the appearance and the operation for the owner remain almost unchanged. Rather accidentally, a solution was found that fulfills this 'wash me - but don't get me wet' requirement. But that is very demanding or complex in terms of circuitry, but mostly because of the required manual work and experience in terms of component complexity.
  • Counter display like the original counter, ie the same counting speed
  • 7-segment display white, 5 mm (other colors with filter foil)
  • Minimal change from the original TS1000 appearance, only the 7-segment display is different
  • 5 digit display with 0.1s digit replacing the slow but visible progression of the 1s digit of the mechanical counter
  • Counter reading is retained even when switched off
  • Optional display of the tape running time (h.mm.ss), suitable for different tape types and reel diameters
  • Preselection for autostop function works like the original counter

Operation of the digital counter on the Grundig TS1000
When the tape recorder is switched on, the number of the firmware version is displayed for a brief moment, followed by the last count reached. If the internal 5 V operating voltage of the tape recorder falls, in particular when it is switched off, the counter reading is transferred to the non-volatile memory. Sometimes it is also visible - at least partially - that Lo U (= low voltage) is displayed in this state.
Reset: The counter reading is reset to 0000 with a brief press of the button (< 800 ms).

tape running time display
With a longer press of the button (> 800 ms and < 2.4 s) you switch from meter reading to time display. Display: h.mm.ss
1. The counter is set to 0000 at the beginning of the tape.
2. The tape type, i.e. the thickness of the tape (standard, long-play or double-play tape) and the diameter of the take-up spool (18, 22 or 26.5 cm) have been correctly set on the counter. This need not be done at the beginning of the tape.

To set the tape type, the button is pressed for a long time (> 2.4 s). The current setting appears:

26 LP: 26.5 cm (core diameter 114.6 mm), long-playing tape (35 µm)
26 dP: 26.5 cm (core diameter 114.6 mm), double play tape (26 µm)
26 SP: 26.5 cm (core diameter 114.6 mm), standard tape (52 µm)
22 LP: 22 cm, (core diameter 61.4 mm), long-playing tape (35 µm)
22 dP: 22 cm, (core diameter 61.4 mm), double play tape (26 µm)
22 SP: 22 cm, (core diameter 61.4 mm), standard tape (52 µm)
18LP: 18 cm, (core diameter 46.4 mm), long-playing tape (35 µm)
18 dP: 18 cm, (core diameter 46.4 mm), double play tape (26 µm)

Each short press selects the next tape type.
Pressing the button longer (> 800 ms, < 2.4 s) switches back to the meter reading or time display.

Negative times are also displayed for counter readings < 0000, but this only makes sense for small negative times - actually only in the area of the leader tape.

The counter display at which a stop signal can be triggered is set with the selector wheels. As in the original, to trigger a stop, the autostop button must be pressed so that the red autostop LED lights up. Every time you switch a selector wheel, the current preselection is displayed for a short moment, with the leading zeros being suppressed for clarity in the counter display.
If the display is switched to the time display, when switching on a preselector wheel, the counter reading set for the auto stop is not displayed, but rather the associated tape running time.
How can I have my counter converted electronically?
You order the conversion kit from us. We will send you the small adapter board and the board holder, an outer packaging for the old counter and illustrated instructions for dismantling. After you have removed the old counter, send it to us with the prepaid UPS label enclosed with the shipment. After 6-8 working days you will receive your modified counter and you will reinstall it.
